Communicate and Disseminate

From communicating the impact of research to commercializing the technology behind it, the University of Michigan provides a number of resources to help students, faculty and staff disseminate their work to a wider audience.


  • Data Visualization

    • ​The U-M Library offers open workshops (on specific tools and basic principles), in-course instruction, individual consultations and help finding appropriate data sets. Advanced hardware and software configurations for data visualizations are located in the Shapiro Library and the Duderstadt Center.

  • Deep Blue

    • ​Deep Blue, the university's permanent, safe and accessible service for representing the rich intellectual community, provides access to the work that makes U-M a leader in research, teaching and creativity. Deep Blue Data is a repository offered by the U-M Library that provides access and preservation services for digital research data that were developed or used in the support of research activities at U-M.

  • Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research

    • An international consortium of more than 750 academic institutions and research organizations, ICPSR provides leadership and training in data access, curation and methods of analysis for the social science research community.

  • Library Copyright Office

    • The Library Copyright Office provides information to help students, faculty and staff make decisions about sharing and using copyrighted material in their research, learning and teaching.

  • Michigan Publishing

    • ​Michigan Publishing publishes scholarly and educational materials in a range of formats for wide dissemination and permanent preservation; provides publishing services to the U-M community and beyond; and advocates for the broadest possible access to scholarship everywhere.

  • Office of Technology Transfer

    • Under U-M Tech Transfer policy and the terms of most funding agreements, researchers have an obligation to promptly disclose research tools to U-M Tech Transfer.

    • Research tools disclosed to U-M Tech Transfer will be added into the Research Tool Portfolio and a dissemination strategy will be further discussed.

  • Open Access

    • Open access scholarship is available online and can be read for free. It is often available for use and sharing without copyright and licensing restrictions commonly placed on published works.

  • Clinical Trial Results Reporting

    • The U-M Medical School provides an overview of the steps researchers must take to register their clinical trials on

  • Sweetland Center for Writing

    • The Sweetland Center for Writing, a comprehensive writing center, exists to support student writing at all levels and in all forms and modes. To accomplish this mission, Sweetland oversees the College of LSA’s First-Year and Upper-Level writing requirements, offers one-to-one tutoring for undergraduate and graduate students in our faculty-led Writing Workshop and undergraduate Peer Writing Center, and teaches writing courses from the 100 to the graduate level.

  • Registry of Research Data Repositories

    • By offering detailed information on more than 2,000 research data repositories, re3data is the most comprehensive source of reference for research data infrastructures globally.

    Communications and Public Outreach

    • Michigan News

      • Michigan News promotes research, major events, expertise and programs to enhance the university's reputation around the world. The office uses multiple methods and platforms for storytelling, including news release distribution, social media engagement and multimedia production. Michigan News also offers media training for faculty to help prepare for interviews and media events.

    • The University Record

      • The University Record is the official source for faculty-staff news at U-M. The publication, in print and online, accepts articles of interest to U-M faculty, staff and retirees from units across the Ann Arbor campus, the Health System and from the Flint and Dearborn regional campuses.

    • Michigan Research

      • To boost awareness of the excitement, value and impact of U-M research, the Office of Research publishes a monthly newsletter that summarizes key research news and trends from across campus for a broad range of audiences.

    • Social Media

      • UMSocial maintains the strategic direction and development of all university-wide social accounts, as well as college, school and program presences. UMSocial also maintains the official accounts inventory, provides consultation services and training, and offers best practices.

    • The Conversation

      • ​The Conversation is an independent source of news and views from the academic and research community, delivered direct to the public. Its team of professional editors work with university and research institute experts to unlock their knowledge for use by the wider public.

    • Federal Relations for Research

      • ​The U-M Washington, D.C. Office serves as a base to reach out to Congress and the federal government for support of the university's teaching, research and service missions.

    • Center for Educational Outreach

      • ​The Center for Educational Outreach supports and advances U-M's commitment to educational outreach and academic excellence. The center partners with students, faculty and staff to develop and implement programs that inform, engage and inspire a diverse community of scholars.

    • Public Engagement and Impact

      • To ensure U-M continues to provide an environment for altruism well into the future, the university launched a Public Engagement and Impact focus area. Key to the success of the focus area will be the involvement of U-M's esteemed faculty of professors, primary researchers and librarians.

    • Michigan Health Lab

      • Michigan Health Lab shapes and shares the future of health by highlighting innovation from Michigan Medicine and beyond.


      • Michigan Research Experts

        • Michigan Research Experts is a searchable database of research expertise across the University of Michigan, developed by the Medical School Office of Research as a tool for the research community to foster collaboration on campus and beyond.

      • Altmetric

        • Altmetric is a tool that searches the web for "mentions" of research outputs, such as journal articles or book chapters, to show how readers are engaging with scholarly publications online.

      • Research Impact Assessment

        • This research guide provides an overview of several metrics, methods and tools commonly used in assessing scholarly impact in the health sciences. Researchers, funders and administrators often use impact assessment to inform decision-making processes.


        • Technology Transfer

          • Tech Transfer is responsible for the commercialization of university research discoveries. Its team enhances these research discoveries to encourage licensing and broad deployment with existing businesses and newly formed U-M startups.

        • Fast Forward Medical Innovation

          • Fast Forward Medical Innovation offers resources and support to world-class biomedical researchers at U-M, and across the state. Its funding programs, educational offerings and industry connections help biomedical researchers navigate the road to successful innovation and commercialization, with the ultimate goal of positively impacting human health.

        • Center for Entrepreneurship

          • The Center for Entrpreneurship provides active learning experiences to all U-M students and faculty through classes and programs designed to teach the skills needed to successfully translate high-potential projects and ideas into the world.

        • Innovate Blue

          • As the university's hub for entrepreneurship and innovation, Innovate Blue helps turn ideas into action by supporting, connecting, and expanding the Michigan entrepreneurial network and community.

        • Zell Lurie Institute

          • The Samuel Zell & Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and Center for Venture Capital and Private Equity advances the knowledge and practice of entrepreneurship and innovation through a broad range of activities, including academics, symposium, competitions and global community outreach.

          Translational Research

          • Translational Research

            • As a public university, U-M has a special obligation to ensure that society benefits from the knowledge, insights and other products that arise. The translation of intellectual work to public benefit can take many paths, including undergraduate and graduate education, papers and books, clinical practice, technology licensing and works of art.

          • Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research

            • The Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research enables and enhances U-M clinical and translational research through its work to educate, fund, connect and support research teams across campus and beyond.
