International Partnerships
Global Michigan, a campus-wide portal for U-M international engagement, features faculty initiatives, education abroad opportunities for students and a collection of travel policies and resources designed to support global activities for all U-M community members
Through collaborative international partnerships, researchers are pushing the frontiers of knowledge and discovery by working together to find solutions to the world's most urgent problems.
The success of these important partnerships depends on the highest standards of integrity, transparency and trust. In working with international partners, the University of Michigan maintains the highest standards in pursuit of new knowledge, and complies fully with the federal regulations and guidelines that govern research and scholarship.
International Research and Scholarship Guidance
Amid growing federal concerns regarding "undue foreign influence" on academic research, several federal agencies have issued statements emphasizing the need for increased transparency around activities that may unduly influence research or research results.
As these agencies further develop their guidelines for the required disclosure of international research collaboration and activity, U-M developed an important resource guide to ensure successful research collaborations with international partners.
U-M has developed collaborative partnerships with universities worldwide, and by working together, researchers help advance knowledge, solve challenging societal problems, and create new products and services that enhance quality of life.
Below are some examples of U-M international research partnerships.
U-M-Berlin Collaborative
- The U-M-Berling Collaborative is a joint program between U-M and four educational institutions in Berlin, including Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Deutsches Zentrum für Altersfragen, Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung and Deutsches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung. As part of the collaborative, researchers from all five institutions are working together to address challenges and opportunities in the social sciences.
Brazil Initiative
- The Brazil Initiative at the university's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies is a university-wide initiative to promote research, teaching and activities about Brazil, and to enhance collaborations with Brazilian institutions and colleagues.
Ethiopia-Michigan Collaborative Consortium

U-M faculty and students engage with diverse stakeholders across the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, from ministry officials and national funding agencies to universities and non-governmental organizations. The collaboration extends beyond academia through community-based research, patient care, service learning, scholarship and research.
Global REACH
